The Run for Liberty was first held in 2003, the brainchild of then part-time naturalist Megan Lane Kent – a marathon runner herself. In that first year, eighty community members and several local sponsors were brought together for a day of fun and exercise, and raised $900 towards feeding and caring for Liberty. Megan has moved on to other activities, but the race continues as an annual tradition.
Over the years, we’ve been blessed to play host to some five hundred runners and raised over $10,000 for our cause. The race is open for both runners looking to compete, and walkers who simply enjoy fresh air and the beautiful scenery offered by the sanctuary. The beauty of the course, as the leaves are beginning to show their fall colors, is hard to match.
Our goal for 2009 is to raise all of the funding needed to support Liberty throughout the year. Even with an incredible team of dedicated volunteers, it costs approximately $7,500 per year for her care and maintenance.
Events for children and other community members are also held at the RfL, including but not limited to: scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, bug collecting, a blind trail, quilt raffles, and educational displays at our butterfly garden and on our trails. With your help, we hope to make 2009 the year of our biggest and most fun race yet!
